The year was 1935, Boeing had just designed a new plane dubbed Model 299. Although much like any plane they needed a test pilot, so on the morning of October 20th, famous Boeing test pilot, Leslie Tower took off from Army Air Corp’s Wright field. However 7 minutes after he took off, the plane crashed killing Leslie and his fellow pilot. An extensive investigation found that they failed to disengage the control lock after takeoff which effectively removed their ability to control the aircraft.
This sparked new questions about the complexity of the aircraft, which later became known as the B-17 “Flying Fortress”. With 4 engines and a slew of features it required extensive memorization of tasks to be performed in order for a successful takeoff.
Boeing’s recommendation was to create a Pre-flight checklist
which has since become a staple of aviation, health-care and businesses alike. Even if you don’t run a business, that’s no reason not to have checklists in your life though. Take my Evernote Travel Checklist
for example, it singlehandedly helped to reduce my anxiety while traveling as no longer did I find myself unable to sleep the night before wondering if I had forgotten something.
